Last week, Year 10 student Ollie joined The Bigger Printing Company as part of the Balcarras School Work Experience Program. Ollie spent the week gaining a firm understanding of how a large format company operates by spending time with every department, whilst also completing his very own design project.
On his first day, Ollie was given an understanding on how the large format print equipment works, and the general work flow that Bigger Printing follows. He was also given his design brief; to design, process and observe the printing process of his very own set of posters. The subject of his design was open, and Ollie chose to design some posters to advertise Cheltenham Swimming Water Polo Club (a club of which he is a member of, as well as Team GB Water Polo).
Ollie divided his time during the rest of the week by spending time working on the design of his poster with assistance from David (Bigger Printing’s Head of Marketing and Operations), and spending time with every department including Sales, Pre-Production, Marketing, and Production.
Once Ollie had finalised his design, he exported his file as a print-ready PDF, then processed and proofed the file ready for production. Ollie then observed every stage of his posters being printed, sealed, and trimmed.
Commenting on Ollie’s week at Bigger Printing, Head of Marketing and Operations, David Bowen said “Ollie was very enthusiastic to gain a full understanding of how we do what we do, and more importantly why we do what we do. We knew Ollie had a strong interest in design before he started with us, so a design project made sense as it allowed him to expand on his design skills, whilst also understanding how to design for large format output. I think Ollie can be very proud of the design he has produced, and I feel it will succeed in advertising the water polo team to potential new players.
Looking back on his work placement week, Ollie commented “My week with The Bigger Printing Company has been great, I have been well looked after and learnt many skills, such as design skills that will become very useful for my interests. Everyone has been very friendly and helpful in the week and I have felt very comfortable throughout".
